183. Last Christmas

Christmas comes only once every year,
A time of togetherness, friends who are dear.
Don’t look too closely or else you may see
a solitary soul sitting all on her own,
Her family lost and her neighbours unknown,
she dreaded this Christmas day sitting alone.

Christmas comes when the cold winds do blow,
We sit round the fire, the warmth, the glow.
Don’t look too closely or else you may see
a solitary soul who has nowhere to go,
Who sits in a doorway come rain or come snow,
Whose home is a memory from long, long ago.

Christmas comes when it’s wintry and cold,
a time for the young ones to honour the old.
Don’t look too closely or else you may see
a solitary soul whose best years are long passed,
Whose movements are painful, whose eyes are down cast,
who fears that this Christmas day may be her last.
who hopes that this Christmas day will be her last.
